WHOIS Privacy
WHOIS privacy protects your personal information from appearing in public domain registration records. When enabled, your contact details are replaced with privacy service information.
What is WHOIS
WHOIS is a public database that lists contact information for domain owners. By default, this includes:
Your name
Email address
Phone number
Mailing address
This information is publicly searchable by anyone online.
How WHOIS privacy works
When you enable WHOIS privacy, your personal details are hidden and replaced with the contact information of a privacy service. You still own and control the domain, but your private information is protected from:
Spam and unsolicited marketing
Identity theft attempts
Public exposure of your contact details
WHOIS privacy is included free with all domains registered through Umso and is enabled by default (if possible).
Manage WHOIS privacy
1. Open domain settings
Navigate to the Domains tab and select your domain.
2. Find WHOIS Privacy section
Locate the WHOIS Privacy settings on the domain management page.
3. Toggle privacy protection
Turn WHOIS privacy on or off. Changes typically take effect within 24 hours.
Some domain extensions (.gov, certain country codes) don't support WHOIS privacy due to registry requirements. Check your specific domain extension's eligibility.
When to disable WHOIS privacy
You may need to temporarily disable WHOIS privacy for:
Domain transfers to another registrar
SSL certificate verification in some cases
Specific legal or business requirements
Remember to re-enable it once you've completed these tasks.
