Nameserver Registration
Nameserver registration (also called glue records or host records) lets you create custom branded nameservers for your domain, like ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com. This is an advanced feature typically used by hosting providers and DNS services who want to offer nameserver hosting under their own brand.
This is an advanced feature. Most users don't need custom nameservers and should use Umso's default nameservers or their DNS provider's nameservers instead.
When you need nameserver registration
Custom nameservers are useful if you:
Run a hosting or DNS service and want to offer white-label nameservers to clients
Manage DNS for multiple domains and want consistent branding
Have specific technical requirements for nameserver configuration
For standard website or email setup, this feature isn't necessary.
How nameserver registration works
Nameserver registration creates a link between a nameserver hostname (like ns1.yourdomain.com) and an IP address. This tells the internet where to find your nameserver when someone looks up your domain.
You need:
A domain registered through Umso
IP addresses for your nameserver infrastructure (typically from your hosting provider or DNS service)
At least two nameserver hostnames for redundancy
Register custom nameservers
1. Go to domain settings
Navigate to the Domains tab and select your domain.
2. Open Nameserver Registration
Find the Nameserver Registration section.
3. Add nameserver host
Click "Register Nameserver" and enter:
Hostname: The subdomain for your nameserver (e.g., ns1, ns2)
IP Address: The IPv4 address where your nameserver is hosted
4. Create multiple nameservers
Repeat for additional nameservers (ns2, ns3, etc.). Most setups require at least two for redundancy.
5. Wait for propagation
Nameserver registration can take up to 24 hours to propagate fully.
Registering custom nameservers doesn't automatically make your domain use them. You still need to set your domain's nameservers to the ones you registered.
Use your registered nameservers
After registering nameservers, you can:
Set them as nameservers for your own domain via Manage Nameservers
Use them for other domains you manage (at Umso or other registrars)
Provide them to clients if you're running a hosting service
Edit or delete registered nameservers
To modify nameserver registration:
Go to your domain's Nameserver Registration settings
Find the nameserver host you want to change
Update the IP address or delete the registration
Changes propagate within 24-48 hours.
