Manage Nameservers

Nameservers are servers that handle DNS queries for your domain. They determine which DNS records are used to route traffic for your domain. By default, domains registered through Umso use Umso's nameservers, but you can change them to use external DNS providers.

When to change nameservers

You might want to use custom nameservers if:

  • You're using an external DNS provider like Cloudflare, Route53, or DNSimple

  • You need advanced DNS features not available in Umso

  • You're consolidating DNS management across multiple domains and services

  • A third-party service requires you to use their nameservers

Changing nameservers transfers all DNS control to the new provider. Your domain will stop using Umso's DNS records, which may disconnect your website until you configure DNS at the new provider.

View current nameservers

Go to the Domains tab, select your domain, and find the Nameservers section. This shows which nameservers are currently authoritative for your domain.

Change nameservers

1. Get nameserver addresses

Obtain the nameserver addresses from your DNS provider. They usually look like ns1.provider.com and ns2.provider.com. You typically need at least two.

2. Open nameserver settings

In your domain settings, navigate to the Nameservers section and click "Update to Custom Nameservers".

3. Enter new nameservers

Replace Umso's nameservers with your new provider's nameservers. Most domains require 2-4 nameservers.

4. Save and wait for propagation

Save your changes. Nameserver updates can take 24-48 hours to fully propagate, though many complete within a few hours.

Before changing nameservers, set up all necessary DNS records at your new provider. This ensures your website and email continue working during the transition.

Return to Umso nameservers

To switch back to Umso's DNS management:

  1. Go to your domain's Nameserver settings

  2. Click "Use Default Nameservers"

  3. Confirm the change

Your domain will return to using Umso's DNS records.

Verify nameserver changes

After changing nameservers, you can verify the update using online DNS checker tools. Enter your domain name to see which nameservers are currently responding. Full propagation may take time, so some locations might still show old nameservers initially.
