Multi-Language Websites

To reach your international audience, you can make your website available in multiple different languages. Here's a quick overview of the feature:

  • Any text on websites can be translated
  • Blogs can currently not be translated
  • Multi-Language websites are available only on the Business subscription
  • Content has to be translated manually
  • You can enable the feature for individual pages

 

Adding Available Languages

First, open your website in the editor and navigate to the page you want to translate. This setting is specific for each individual page. You can translate all of your pages or just a few popular ones. For example you might want to translate your homepage but not your privacy policy. This is up to you. 

In the editor, click on Site Meta

In the Site Meta settings, find the Primary Language and Additional Languages setting. To add a language, you select it on the left and then click on "Add". This will make the language available to your site visitors. Now it's time to translate your content.

Translate Content

We currently do not translate any of your content automatically. To get a high quality translation, the process has to be done manually. To edit your website in one of the additional languages, click on the navigation bar at the top of the page and select the language you want to edit.

You will notice that the preview of your website does not change. That's because we use the content of the default language unless you enter a different value for a specific language. If you try to edit any of your content, you'll see that the input fields are all empty. That's where you can enter your translation.

Once you enter your translation, it will appear in the preview and on your published page. You can translate all content but you don't have to. Anything you leave empty will fall-back to the default language. 

 

 

What your visitors see

When you publish a website with one or more additional languages, we will automatically serve a visitor with the most suitable version based on the information we receive from their web browser. According to best practices, we use the "Accept-Language" header and not the estimated location of the visitor. 

 

Visitors will also have the option to change the language manually. When they do, we will remember that setting by creating a non-identifying cookie with the language preference. The language picker will appear in your site footer if you have one or more additional language options.
